Smart card market for government projects to reach 600 million in 2014

ABI survey recently published a survey report, the report shows that the total number of cards issued by government departments for residential ID and health card projects reached 435 million in 2013, a decrease of 6 million compared to 2012. For the lower shipments in 2013, there are two main reasons.

1, the whole market is still affected by the project delay, 2013 deployment of the project, many postponed to 2014 to really start, postponed smart card ID card countries are Russia, Brazil, Poland, France. 2014 global government projects smart card market will be issued to 526 million.

  2. Large national ID card projects are only being completed this year, such as the Smart Health Card projects in Indonesia and Germany. Both projects began deployment in 2012, but by 2013 the number of projects had weakened more than expected, so the health card and national ID card projects fell by 5 million and 24 million respectively from the 2012 forecast.

It is understood that the postponement of the projects in 2013 was not a coincidence; the rollout of multiple applications of smart cards, which has made the complexity much greater, and the difficulties that existed compared to expectations also played a role in hindering the progress of the projects. Nevertheless, ABI believes that the market will show positive growth in the future, with projects such as healthcare, ID cards and driving licences reigniting the smart card market and new technologies offering higher application value.
